Stormy spring weather could pose challenges for drivers tomorrow, with the Metservice issuing wind and rain warnings for the top of the South and lower North Islands.
The Metservice has issued a strong wind watch for Marlborough, Wellington, and Wairarapa from 8am to 6pm tomorrow (Friday).
It will affect all regional state highways and means motorcyclists, cyclists, and drivers of high-sided vehicles (eg trucks, campervans) will need to take extra care on exposed routes such as State Highway 2 Remutaka Hill and the Wainui Saddle on State Highway 1, Transmission Gully.
Meanwhile, a heavy rain watch has been issued for Buller about and north of Westport and Tasman west of Motueka. It is in force between 1 am and midday tomorrow. Periods of heavy rain are forecast.
This weather is set to affect State Highway 60 and State Highway 6. People travelling on these routes must be alert for road hazards and drive to the conditions. Strong winds and heavy rain can cause slips, treefalls and localised flooding. Extreme weather can also cause roads to be closed at short notice.
Drivers should check weather and road conditions before they travel and allow extra time for their journeys.
