The NZ Transport Agency is to invest $750,000 to fix a major culvert on State Highway 3, near Egmont Village in Taranaki.
Preliminary work is expected to start on October 29 2018. The culvert was damaged during heavy rain in August 2017.
NZTA Taranaki Transport System Manager, Ross I’Anson, says the culvert will be extended back to its original length.
“The extension will be quicker to build than other potential solutions, provide less disruption to people using this busy state highway and ensure clear passage remains for the stream.
“It was clear action needed to be taken to address this issue in Taranaki so we are moving forward with the plan now with work starting soon.
“Once complete, the repair will make this section of State Highway 3 safer and easier for people to use and support the safe movement of freight,” Mr I’Anson says.
During construction people will continue to be able to use the existing State Highway but there may be some delays.
The work is expected to be complete early next year, weather permitting. The first stage will involve clearing tracks and preparing the site. The majority of the second stage of work, which involves prefabrications works, will take place offsite. Installation of the culverts is scheduled to commence in January to ensure the work is carried out outside the fish spawning season.
$302 million is forecast to be spent in the Taranaki region in the 2018-2021 National Land Transport Plan. This investment will deliver a safer, better connected and more resilient transport system.
