Waka Kotahi to take over stock control on Gisborne state highways

|

Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency will be taking over responsibility for stock control on State Highways 2 and 35 in the Gisborne region from July 1 2020.

Management of stock on the Gisborne state highway network is currently the responsibility of Gisborne District Council’s animal control team.

Waka Kotahi Senior Network and Journey Manager Helen Harris says the move to transfer responsibility to Waka Kotahi brings Gisborne in line with other regions, where Waka Kotahi contractors manage all incidents on state highways, including stock control.

“From July 1, if anyone sees stock on Gisborne’s state highways, the number to call is 0800 4 HIGHWAYS (0800 44 44 49),” Ms Harris says.

“Please don’t assume someone else has called it in. We want to hear about it, and the sooner we do, the quicker we can respond and ensure our state highways are safe for all road users.

“We thank Gisborne District Council for their service over the years to help keep people safe on our state highway network.”

Gisborne District Council will continue to work with Waka Kotahi on stock control bylaw processes to increase fencing and compliance in the region.

Stock control on local roads will still need to be reported to Gisborne District Council on 0800 653 800.

Plan ahead for a safe, enjoyable journey. Keep up to date with:
