Motorists will need to take a detour on State highway 1 at the Deborah rail bridge south of Oamaru this Sunday, 30 March 2014 between 9am and 5pm, so Kiwirail can carry out a routine safety inspection of the Deborah rail bridge.
This type of inspection is normally carried out about every seven years and important for both rail and road safety. Because of the nature of the inspection it can only be done during daylight hours. Sunday was chosen for the inspection as there is usually less traffic about.
A well signposted detour through the Weston area that could add up to 10 minutes to travel times, will be in place during the closure. Road users are asked to factor this into their travel plans if they are using State highway 1 between Dunedin and Oamaru this Sunday, 30 March 2014.
This detour is the most convenient and practical one available to the Transport Agency and regularly used whenever this section of State highway 1 is closed.
Roadside messages signs will be operating in the area about 3-4 days in prior to the temporary closure. This is to give motorists plenty of advance warning that the highway won’t be available for eight hours between 9am and 5pm this Sunday and that a detour is in place.
