Temporary closure of St Marks Road on-ramp

The St Marks Road southbound on-ramp to the Southern Motorway (SH1) will be closed temporarily from 6am Saturday 4 July until 6pm Sunday 19 July.

The St Marks Road southbound on-ramp to the Southern Motorway (SH1) will be closed temporarily from 6am Saturday 4 July until 6pm Sunday 19 July.

The closure is required to progress ongoing realignment work associated with Stage 1 of the Newmarket Connection: Viaduct Replacement project. The closure has been scheduled to coincide with the school holiday period, when traffic volumes are lower, to minimise disruption to motorists.

The on-ramp has been operating as a single lane facility since Easter. This single lane layout will remain when it reopens on 19 July to allow construction work to continue. Ramp signalling remains in operation however the frequency has been altered to mitigate any localised congestion caused by the reduced capacity.

“The first stage of the Newmarket Connection project is the delivery of the new viaduct’s four southbound lanes, which will help release traditional rush hour pressure on the network by early 2011,” says Tommy Parker, NZ Transport Agency’s acting Regional Director for Auckland and Northland. “An innovative, staged approach to delivery not only allows us to bring forward this key benefit, but do so in a way that causes minimal inconvenience in the interim.”

The NZTA advises southbound motorists to follow the detour signs and access the motorway at Greenlane Interchange, and thanks both motorists and residents in advance for their co-operation.

A 24-hour freephone number, 0508 CONNECT (266 6328), is in operation to field all enquiries relating to the Newmarket Connection project. For further information please visit the project’s website: www.nzta.govt.nz/newmarketconnection(external link)
