The southern Makorori rest area along State Hightway 35 will be closed today at 5pm for chip sealing, and will re-open on Thursday 19 July at 3pm once sealing is completed.
Dave Hadfield, General Manager Tairāwhiti Roads, asks that people consider safety when parking in an alternative location.
“It’s dangerous to try and walk down from the lookout spot at the top of Makorori headland,” Mr Hadfield says.
“So if there’s good surf on Thursday morning or if you’re wanting to enjoy the sunshine in the area, please find another place further along to safely park.”
The upgrade to this area is one of seven rest areas along the coast to receive improvements, thanks to $700,000 of Crown funding as part of the Tairāwhiti Economic Action Plan.
The sites at Anaura Bay, Tikitiki and Te Araroa will be chip sealed on Friday.
Works will soon start in Uawa (Tolaga Bay) and Tokomaru Bay, upgrading current sites to fully serviced rest areas.
Works across all seven sites will be completed by the end of the month.
