The NZ Transport Agency is urging travellers in the top of the South Island to plan ahead for their travel, with severe weather forecast to hit the South Island over the next 24 hours.
Transport Agency Central Regional Performance Manager Mark Owen says a serious weather warning has been issued for areas of the South Island including Nelson and northern Marlborough, with heavy rain and high winds expected.
"When bad weather hits, the roads are more dangerous and need to be treated with respect. If you need to travel, start your journey online by checking the weather on Metservice, then checking the NZTA's website for road conditions and warnings.
"Drivers should expect wet, slippery roads, potentially leading to surface flooding and slips. High winds are also expected, which is a particular risk for anyone on a bike or motorbike, or high sided vehicles like vans and campervans.
"If you're caught in the weather, please drop your speeds, increase your following distances, make sure you have your headlights on, and keep your eyes on the road at all times."
