Final surfacing works on the southbound lanes of the Longswamp section of the Waikato Expressway are expected to be complete within the next fortnight, subject to weather.
Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency Waikato Portfolio Manager Darryl Coalter says the completion of the southbound lanes will allow all traffic to move onto those lanes while works switch to the northbound lanes.
“We are aiming to lay asphalt along 2kms at the northern end of the northbound lanes before opening the lanes up for holiday traffic.
“This northern stretch of seal was damaged during the warmer weather experienced last week and has now been repaired ready for the final asphalt surface.
“The remaining 4kms will be completed after the holiday period.”
The Longswamp section of the expressway involves widening the existing State Highway 1 route to four lanes with central and side barriers. It also includes a new local road bridge across the Expressway. The new local road bridge connects Whangamarino Road to Summertime Lane and improves connections for the community across the Expressway.
