The NZ Transport Agency says restrictions for heavy vehicles is in place as urgent repairs are being made to the State Highway 6 (SH6) Karangarua suspension Bridge south of Fox Glacier.
Repairs are required to replace damages to the hangar rods which were caused by the recent storm which swept through the West Coast. Transport Agency's Asset Manager, Mark Pinner says the success and progress of this work will determine how soon the bridge can be reopened to heavier vehicles such as coaches and trucks.
"Light vehicles and campervans will be able to access the Karangarua Bridge one at time between 8am to 5pm, but we will restrict access for heavier vehicles and this will be maintained until we have completed the repairs and have removed the restriction," says Mr Pinner.
Mr Pinner says heavier vehicles such as coaches and trucks should consider using alternative routes via the easy coast if travel absolutely essential.
"This restriction will cut off access from Wanaka in Central Otago via Haast Pass. Mr Pinner expects an update on how the repairs have progressed tomorrow.
