Heavy rain is causing further instability at the summit of State Highway 25A and the road is now closed until further notice to ensure public safety.
The Tapu-Coroglen and 309 roads are also closed.
Coromandel road users should expect longer travel times using the detour route, which is State Highway 25 around the edge of the peninsula and State Highway 2 via Karangahake Gorge.
Prior to the full closure today, SH25A has been open to one lane under stop/go traffic management between 7am and 7pm and closed overnight.
Today’s full closure is to ensure the safety of road users and our crews in the wet conditions. With the MetService heavy rain warning in place, the road is likely to be closed for the remainder of the holiday weekend. Emergency vehicles can be guided through.
Investigations are ongoing into the cracks that appeared on SH25A last week following Ex-Cyclone Hale.
The site is being monitored and boreholes have been drilled to understand the full nature of the movement. New cracks have continued to appear, including in the eastbound lane, which has been available for traffic during the day.
The road saw further deformation over the past week as the site continues to move. With heavy rain predicted over the weekend and into next week, Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency signalled on Wednesday that the road may have to be closed if it becomes too unstable.
