Drivers travelling between Canterbury and Marlborough are recommended to take the inland route via Lewis Pass following a truck crash in Marlborough this morning.

A truck and trailer carrying soil has rolled south of Lake Grassmere, near Taimate Road, blocking State Highway 1.

The closure is expected to be prolonged. Clearing the crash scene and the spilled soil is expected to take several hours to complete.

The inland route detour for north bound traffic is SH7, then SH65 at Springs Junction, right onto SH6, right onto SH63 onto SH1. Reverse for southbound traffic.

This detour will add an additional 1-hour 45mins on a journey between Blenheim and Waipara.

Drivers, particularly those with Picton ferry connections, must factor this delay into their travel plans.
