The Transport Agency advises State Highway 1 is currently closed between Taupō and Tūrangi, 630m west of the Tauranga/Taupō Bridge, due to fallen trees blocking the road.
Acting Waikato System Manager Rob Campbell says as the area is still experiencing high winds, it’s not safe for contractors to remove the fallen trees.
“We are working with NZ Police to monitor the situation and our contractors will remove the trees and reopen the road once it is safe to do so.”
In the meantime, motorists are asked to follow the detour or to delay unnecessary travel where possible.
“A detour is in place down the western side of Lake Taupō and our contractors have been in contact with local schools and bus operators to keep them informed.”
Mr Campbell says winds are expected to die down by around 5pm and encourages motorists to check the Transport Agency’s Journey Planner for up-to-date information about their intended route before setting out.
“The Transport Agency thanks motorists for their patience.”
