A project to improve cyclist and pedestrian safety at the intersection of ANZAC Avenue and State highway 1 in Dunedin has now been finished, apart from some ground levelling work on the cycle lane.
The cycle lane work should be finished by the end of this month.
The project supports a wider Transport Agency programme started earlier this year to increase cycle safety on the State highway 1 through the Dunedin CBD. This included increasing the width of nearly two kilometres of cycle lanes between Queens Gardens in the central city to Howe Street in North Dunedin.
Transport Agency Otago/Southland Highway Manager Ian Duncan says the ANZAC Avenue intersection upgrade improves safety at one of the Dunedin’s busier state highway intersections for cyclists, pedestrian as well as motorists.
“As part of the $150,000 project, cycle signals were installed at the intersection of State highway 1 and Stuart St. The signals allow safer access for cyclists wanting to turn from the State highway 1 southbound cycle lane into Stuart Street”.
Mr Duncan says pedestrian safety has also been greatly improved with a new footpath that now links ANZAC Avenue with the Dunedin Railway Station and nearby Settlers Museum.
