Work that will almost double the length of the State Highway (SH88) Dunedin to Port Chalmers walking and cycling shared path gets underway early next week (Monday 13 February.)
The NZ Transport Agency awarded the contract for this project to Dunedin based company Delta Utility Services. It involves extending the existing shared path 2km from Maia to the St Leonards Boat Club and will see it run along two sections of the Otago Harbour causeway that carries the main trunk railway line.
The current path from Dunedin to Maia is 2.5km long.
NZ Transport Agency Southern Regional Director Jim Harland says this work represents a more than $1M investment by the Agency in safer walking and cycling alongside SH 88. When completed in June, it will provide a continuous 4.5 km path for walking and cycling commuters between Dunedin and St Leonards.
“The shared path offers considerable safety benefits, among these are giving walkers and cyclists an alternative to using SH88, the main route to the Port Chalmers container port. The path will connect with Dunedin via the cycleway around the Forsyth Barr Stadium and then on to other cycle lanes around the city.”
Mr Harland said investigation work on the St Leonard’s to Port Chalmers leg of the path should be completed in the next few months.
