Stabilisation improvement work on SH1 Pine Hill Dunedin

The NZ Transport Agency (NZTA) say drainage work to reduce the risk of land movement on a section of State highway 1 Pine Hill Road in Dunedin starts this Monday 11 March.

NZTA Otago-Southland State Highway Manager Ian Duncan says around $600,000 has been budgeted for this work on a 200 metre section of the highway just north of the George Street over bridge. The job involves drilling then inserting drain pipes into the bank on the south side of road to remove water.

“This area does have a history of land movement, but our expectation is that these pipes will remove enough water to reduce any major risk of land movement that may have an impact on the stability of the road.”

Most of the work will be undertaken between 7.00am and 7.00pm Monday to Saturday. The whole job including landscaping work is scheduled for completion by late May.

Over this period the North-bound lane will be reduced to one lane with no access to Bank St for right turning traffic off Pine Hill Rd. While vehicle access to properties will be maintained alternative routes may be required. When the contractors are working on site, access to Bank St will be via the Opoho Rd end only.

Mr Duncan said at the end of each day the contractor will remove their equipment and reinstate both uphill lanes of the highway.
