The NZ Transport Agency says people need to drive with care on State Highway 11 between Kawakawa and Waitangi in Northland and speed restrictions are in place at several locations.
The highway’s chip seal has lifted in several places, particularly on curves and tight corners. There are 50kph restrictions at Lemons Hill, Opua,Te Haumi and Whangae, and a 70kph restriction at Waitangi.
The Transport Agency’s Journey Manager for Northland, Jacqui Hori-Hoult, says contractors are visiting the sites daily to monitor the situation and to ensure road users are safe.
“Final repairs will be made as soon as the weather becomes warmer to allow re-sealing work, which is typically toward the end of October,” says Ms Hori-Hoult. “While we investigate the cause of the problem, we regret any inconvenience to road users. We have signs out to warn people of lower speeds so that they can continue to use the highway safely.”
