Speed restrictions in place from Sunday on SH1 at St Mary's
Bay

The NZ Transport Agency is advising Auckland motorists to drive with care and respect speed restrictions as work gets underway from Sunday evening to widen SH1 at St Mary’s Bay.

A speed limit of 70km/h will apply and lane widths will be reduced while work is carried out from the south end of the Auckland Harbour Bridge to Fanshawe Street.

“This extremely busy section of Auckland’s motorway network will be a live construction zone from Sunday evening, and we urge people to drive with care for their own safety and the safety of workers,” said the NZTA’s State Highways Manager for Auckland, Tommy Parker.

Drivers are also asked to choose their correct south bound lane early after leaving the harbour bridge to help reduce the risk of congestion.

“We’re committed to keeping all lanes open during the day throughout the working week, and we can best achieve that with the co-operation of everyone using this section of the motorway,” Mr Parker added.

Mr Parker said there could be some work-related lane closures at night or on weekends when traffic volumes were not high.

The widening at St Mary’s Bay is part of the first stage of the Victoria Park Tunnel project.
