NZ Transport Agency contractors are expected to start the construction of a 40 metre long steel pile retaining wall on State Highway 25, 9kms south of Coromandel town next week.
A slip below the road occurred at the site on August 10.
The Transport Agency’s Regional Performance Manager Karen Boyt says all 41 of the nine metre steel piles that will form the retaining wall are on site.
“Weather permitting the piles will start to be put in place next week, then the filling of the retaining wall and re-paving of the road can begin.
“This work is expected to take around a month and we really appreciate the patience of road users, freight operators and their clients who have been and will continue to be affected during this time,” she says.
While the works are carried out, traffic will remain restricted to a single lane with a stop-go sign in operation because of the unstable nature of the site.
Motorists should expect delays and avoid the area if possible.

State Highway 25 - Slip below the road, 9kms south of Coromandel town
The NZ Transport Agency advises motorists to expect delays on State Highway 25 just south of Coromandel Township due to a slip below the road.
Work is beginning on a 40 metre long retaining wall. One lane of the road will remain closed and stop/go traffic management will be in place. Motorists can expect delays and should avoid the area if possible.
SH5 Tumunui - south of Rotorua
Work on a major repair to State Highway 5 at Tumunui, 17kms south of Rotorua, is underway. Motorists are advised to expect lengthy delays and consider using an alternative route.
Transport Agency contractors will be digging out and replacing a 12 metre wide, four metre deep stretch of the highway, which has been damaged by a natural process called tunnel erosion.
One lane remains open and stop/go traffic management has been in place since the damage to the road first occurred in late July. Motorists should be prepared for delays of 20 minutes or longer during work hours and are urged to consider using an alternative route such as State Highway 1 and State Highway 30.
SH30 Rotorua - Iles Road/Te Ngae Road significant intersection upgrade (Lynmore junction)
Work is continuing on the upgrade to the intersection at Iles Road and Te Ngae Road (SH30), also known as Lynmore junction.
Lights and a controlled pedestrian crossing are being installed.
The work is expected to be finished by mid-November. Motorists can expect some delays while work is being carried. To avoid any potential delays Lynmore residents can use alternative routes such as Vaughn Road and Tarawera/Lynmore connections.
