Skiers and snowboarders can expect incredible conditions this weekend but need to take extra care on the roads as they head off to the snow, the NZ Transport Agency says.
Contractors will be out in force laying grit and clearing the roads from tonight to try and keep them open, with more snow and icy conditions expected over the coming days.
The Transport Agency’s Waikato journey manager, Liam Ryan says sub-zero temperatures are expected through the central plateau and into South Waikato, and snow showers are forecast to hit the Desert Road (SH1).
“Motorists travelling in or through the Ruapehu, Taupo and South Waikato districts should check conditions before travelling, particularly overnight and during the morning, when ice is most commonly found,” he says.
“Transport Agency contractors will be keeping a close eye on the Desert Road and SH1 south of Waiouru, the Napier-Taupo Road and the roads on the other side of the mountain too as we know these routes are vital to snow lovers,” he says.
“We will be working hard to keep them open but it’s important that people heading to the snow drive with care.
“Slow down, allow more time for their journey, drive to the conditions and be prepared for unexpected hazards in this type of weather.”
