Works are currently underway at St Leonards, SH88 to Port Chalmers, to improve highway safety and create a safe access to the new shared path which will connect the St Leonards community.
The work is part of completing a full shared path to Port Chalmers by Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency.
The highway is currently reduced to a single lane through St Leonards and this will be in place 24/7 until the end of this week (27 January). Following this, the highway will be reduced to a single lane during the day, Monday to Friday, until the works in this area are completed in mid to late March.
At nights and at weekends, two lanes will be available, with temporary speed management.
“At this location, the highway’s city-bound lane will be moved toward the harbour, providing space for both a right turn bay into Pukeko Street and a crossing island,” says Waka Kotahi Senior Project Manager Jason Forbes.
“Once completed, this will mean that path users can cross SH88 one lane at a time – similar to what has been installed at Burkes.
“There is currently no space to move this lane over, so we must create it. The first step is to remove the old retaining walls and footpath through this area to create the space. In doing this, we have to remove the support for the existing highway’s city-bound lane. Until we can construct the new pavement and return the highway support, it is not safe to open this lane.”
Waka Kotahi advises people who travel between Port Chalmers and Dunedin to allow an extra five minutes travel time until the city-bound lane is safely reopened and thanks everyone for being patient.
