State Highway 57 Kimberley Road in Levin reopened to traffic in both directions today, signalling good progress on work to make this road safer for everyone who uses it.

The five-month detour for northbound traffic on SH57 between State Highway 1 and Tararua Road has been lifted. Roadwork on the shoulder of Kimberley Road and Arapaepae South Road will continue, weather dependent, with both lanes open and temporary speed limits in place to ensure people working on the road, residents and people using the road are all kept safe.
Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency Senior Project Manager Wayne Holcroft says Waka Kotahi appreciates the community’s patience while the detour has been in place.
“We know detours can be an inconvenience and we are grateful to the community for their patience while the detour has been in place for these works. As roadworks will continue on the road shoulder and the new Queen Street East roundabout, we ask people to take care while driving through the area and observe the 50km/h temporary speed limit in place while the road shoulder works are underway.”
Neville Turnbull, Resident Committee Chairman at Speldhurst Country Estate on Kimberley Road is looking forward to improved road safety for residents.
The detour for northbound traffic on SH57 between SH1 and Tararua Road was lifted today (Monday 30 May).
The safety improvements along this important regional route will help ensure everyone who uses it can get home safely to their friends and whānau. Improvements include road widening, sections of side barrier and painted wide centrelines.
“Across the country, we’re investing in safer infrastructure in an effort to save lives and prevent people from being killed or seriously injured in crashes on our roads. The improvements along SH57 are a step toward that vision,” Mr Holcroft says.
