The NZ Transport Agency advises SH43, 23 km west of Taumarunui at Tunnel Hill is now closed to all traffic.
Mark Owen, Transport System Manager says the road has dropped away further, making it unsafe for vehicles.
“Safety is our top priority. Geotechnical engineers have visited to assess the site and consider options for repair.
“The road had earlier been closed to heavy vehicles and is now closed to all traffic. At this stage we expect the road to be closed for a number of weeks.”
Motorists heading north should use Mangaparo Road, Ohura Road and Okahukura Saddle Road onto SH4, then on south to Taumarunui. Those travelling south should turn off SH4 onto Okahukura Saddle Road, then Ohura Road and Mangaparo Road onto SH43.
Mr Owen encouraged motorists to drive with caution on the detour route, which is narrow and windy in places.
“The Transport Agency thanks motorists for their patience, and encourages people to plan ahead and allow more time for their journeys.”
A further update will be provided once the extent of the repairs is known and timeframes are confirmed.
