The NZ Transport Agency (NZTA) advises that final sealing work will start this week on the SH2 Muldoon's Corner safety improvements on the Rimutaka Hill Road.
NZTA Wellington State Highways Manager Rod James says the team is now on the home straight and on track to have everything finished ready for the formal opening in May.
“We will be taking advantage of any good weather in the next couple of weeks, so work may continue for extended hours during the day and into the weekend,” says Mr James.
Mr James says that the 1km section of SH2 just south of the summit will change from having a reduced speed limit through a construction site to being brand spanking new.
“During the past few years we’ve been working to improve safety for drivers by easing corners, widening and straightening out the road, installing guardrails and now we’re laying the final surface. All of which makes this kilometre-long stretch the best it can be given its challenging location.”
It also means that it is a very different driving experience from the rest of the hill road.
“Signs will be in place to remind travellers of this. We are asking everyone to take care and drive to the conditions.”
Mr James says the NZTA are grateful to motorists for their ongoing patience and understanding while this important safety project approaches completion.
Construction began on the SH2 Muldoon’s Corner safety improvements in August 2009, after being advanced by the Government’s Jobs and Growth stimulus package. The project will improve safety, visibility, and security for road users, and is expected to be completed mid-2012.
The project is being delivered for the NZTA by Hawkins Infrastructure and Opus International Consultants.
