The NZ Transport Agency is advising motorists to allow extra time for journeys south of Kaikoura as work gets underway today to maintain and improve this section of SH1 south of Kaikoura.
NZ Transport Agency Journey Manager Lee Wright says the work on SH1 at Glen Colwyn, near Peketa, was expected to take about a month to complete.
The works will cover half a kilometre and will involve a full digging up of the road base course, followed by replacement and resealing the surface.
Ms Wright says while the work is carried out traffic will be restricted to a single lane, with traffic lights and speed restrictions in place to ensure the safety of drivers and road workers.
Ms Wright thanked all drivers for taking care near work crews and building in extra time to their SH1 journey south of Kaikoura.
“Overnight both lanes will be open, with the traffic lights in operation while crews are busy in daytime hours.”
