Safety works to begin on State Highway 3 in South Waikato

Safety works will begin this Thursday on a stretch of State Highway 3 between Ohaupo and Te Awamutu to improve safety for right turning motorists.

The NZ Transport Agency (NZTA) says the works are located at McFalls Road through to Jary Road in South Waikato.

NZTA State Highways Manager Kaye Clark says these works are part of a strategy the NZTA has developed to address right turning movements along this passing lane, following an increase in crashes last year.

As part of a planned reseal, line marking will be altered and a right turn bay installed at Jary Road and McFalls Road to improve safety for right turning motorists.

Mrs Clark says approximately 1km of passing opportunities will be used to accommodate the new right turning bays, however, there will still be passing opportunities in both directions either side of the works.

Motorists need to be aware that they no longer have the continuous passing facility along this stretch of highway, she says.

Traffic management controls will be in place while the work is being completed. Motorists may experience delays of 5 to 10 minutes.

Works are expected to be completed by Sunday.
