Following a meeting last week with the Road Transport Association, the New Zealand Transport Agency and Environment Southland are rethinking their approach to stock truck effluent disposal in Southland.
The New Zealand Transport Agency Southland Area Manager Mr Robinson says the meeting highlighted the marked changes in the routes stock trucks are now using to shift livestock around Southland and into Central Otago, compared to two or three years ago.
As a result of this the New Zealand Transport Agency and Environment Southland have ruled out Selbourne Street in Mataura as a long term stock truck effluent disposal site.
Following a full assessment of the Selbourne Street site and taking into account the different routes now being used by stock trucks, it was clear this location wouldn’t deliver the required benefits for the investment involved. In addition to this, it didn’t meet the safety and operational requirements for a stock effluent disposal site
Mr Robinson says our focus is now on identifying other sites that meet these changes in stock truck travel patterns. We will continue to talk with transport operators to ensure we have sites in locations that work for them, and in turn help keep stock effluent off roads, making them safer and more pleasant to use.
