The annual resurfacing and repair work on the Auckland Harbour Bridge was successfully completed early on Monday morning (Monday 5 January) after two weeks of intensive work. All lanes on the bridge as well as Curran Street on-ramp and Stafford Road off-ramp are now open.
Contractors worked in shifts through the nights and took advantage of sunny dry periods during the day to resurface the two northbound lanes, focusing on the northern end near Stafford Road off-ramp where the surface had been damaged by earlier welding work. The damaged surface was stripped off completely and a new polyurethane surface laid. Two special coatings were also laid as a base, to protect the steel underneath the two northbound lanes.
To complete the work, the NZ Transport Agency carried out the resurfacing over the Christmas and New Year holiday period starting on Boxing Day (26 December 2008). The two northbound clip-on lanes of the bridge as well as Curran Street on-ramp and Stafford Road off-ramp were closed. Three lanes stayed open in both directions throughout and motorists also followed signposted detours to Fanshawe Street on-ramp and Onewa Road off-ramp.
“Traffic flowed well in both directions and despite a few days of rain during the closure, the bridge was fully opened before the morning peak period on Monday 5 January when most commuters returned to work. We thank drivers for their patience and co-operation while this essential work was completed,” says NZ Transport Agency acting regional manager Tommy Parker.
The resurfacing of the lanes has provided a skid-resistant surface, which will improve both the safety and driving experience for motorists. The work is part of an ongoing bridge maintenance programme that takes place throughout the year, to look after and maintain the harbour bridge.
