The NZ Transport Agency has started investigations into the feasibility of replacing the Beaumont Bridge on State Highway 8 between Milton and Alexandra.
NZ Transport Agency Highways Manager Niclas Johansson says the NZTA will investigate the benefits and costs of a new bridge. This move is prompted by ongoing costs of maintaining the bridge deck and structure in the last few years and the disruption this work has caused for bridge users.
“A detailed structural report on the condition of the bridge is being prepared and it is due to be completed by Easter 2010. Some inspection work of the bridge is necessary; however it is expected to cause few disruptions for bridge users. The report will establish if there is a strong case to replace the existing bridge, the available options and the costs involved. However, the process for getting the bridge built if its justified is likely to be a long one. The possibility of power generation dams being built in the area could also influence the timing of the construction of any new bridge at Beaumont.
Meanwhile repair work to the Beaumont Bridge will see it closed to traffic for 4 nights next week. Mr Johansson says bridge deck and structural repairs will begin on Monday 7 December and continue through to Thursday 10 December inclusive. The Bridge will be closed at night from 8 pm to 6 am over this period.
Detours will be signposted with the alternative route through Clydevale. Regular Beaumont Bridge users including transport operators have been told about next weeks temporary night time closures of the bridge. Provision has been made to allow emergency service vehicles to use the bridge.
