Changes have been made to reduce the impact of the night time resurfacing of SH6A in Queenstown, due to be completed in the second week of December.
“We’ve taken on board feedback from road users and those living nearby and made changes to further reduce disruptions, starting from Wednesday night this week,” says Mark Stewart, NZ Transport Agency Maintenance Contract Manager.
“In order to meet the particular demands of this section of highway, a temperature-dependant asphalt is being applied, but this has been delayed by unexpectedly cold weather, adding to the time needed to finish this work.
“Reducing the overnight hours means that we expect the project will take an extra two or three days. Weather permitting, the aim is have job finished on Tuesday, 11 December.”
Mr Stewart says because of the nature of the job and its close proximity to where people live along the highway, some disruptions are unavoidable.
This resealing project between Queenstown and Frankton started earlier in November, originally between 8pm and 6am from Sunday to Thursday. Aspiring Highways is doing the road resurfacing on behalf of the Transport Agency.
The majority of the work is between the BP roundabout in Frankton and the Perkins Road intersection. It involves removing traffic islands and kerbing, road repairs and resurfacing to improve the safety and accessibility on this road. People who travel this route at night and overnight should allow extra time for their journey.
