This week, the NZ Transport Agency will be sharing with the public further details of its proposal to improve travel around the Basin Reserve by providing a new bridge and dedicated walking and cycling facilities.
NZTA state highways manager Wellington Rod James says public information days will be held at Mt Cook School this Thursday and at St Joseph’s Church this Saturday and Sunday, giving the public a first hand look at the proposal and the option of talking to the project team.
“This will give the public a chance to see what we will lodge with the Environmental Protection Authority next year, and help them understand the process that comes next. People will have an opportunity to chat to our project team and take a closer look at our plans in order to get a clearer understanding of the project and how it might benefit them.
“While many people are aware that we’re proposing a bridge, these information days will enable them to see the details of how it will work and how it will change their journeys whether they’re travelling by bus, car, bicycle, or on foot.”
Mr James says the information will include more advanced designs for the bridge and the dedicated facility for pedestrians and cyclists. It will also include details on how the NZTA proposes to improve the surrounding space through urban design, plants and lighting.
People can also find out more about how the bridge will help unlock the potential development of a dedicated public transport spine to the Hospital – a key facet of the Ngauranga to Airport Corridor Plan, a joint regional transport strategy developed by Greater Wellington, Wellington City Council and NZTA.
Mr James says the NZTA is now preparing to lodge resource consents early next year. The public will then have the opportunity to provide submissions as part of the consenting process.
The information days will be held at Mt Cook School on 22 November between 4 and 8pm or at St Joseph’s Church on 24 and 25 November between 1 and 5pm.
