A public information day to provide details about the next stage of the NZ Transport Agency's Hairini Link project will be held on Thursday November 12 At Tauranga Boys College Gym 2, between 4pm and 8pm.
Those attending will be able to view plans and speak to the project team about the range of improvements planned for the Fifteenth Avenue/Turret Road/Hairini corridor, in advance of the proposed larger project.
The planned `Advanced Work’ improvements include changes to the Fraser Street/Fifteenth Avenue intersection, improved cycle and pedestrian access from Hairini to Burrows Street and new pedestrian and cycle crossings at Burrows Street and at the Maungatapu roundabout. Other changes are designed to support smoother traffic flow throughout the corridor.
NZ Transport Agency Regional Director Harry Wilson says the project team has focused on improvements that that will help children get to and from school more safely. They have also looked at the whole corridor to see how they can create benefits for drivers, pedestrians and cyclists with improvements that do not require long consent processes.
Construction of the advanced works are planned to commence in the 2010/11 season.
The long-term goal of the Hairini Link project is to widen 15th Avenue, Turret Road and Hairini Bridge, and provide further capacity improvements at the signalised roundabouts at Maungatapu and Hairini.
Mr Wilson says, “There are a number of factors that need to be carefully considered before we can confirm the timing of the long-term works. The signalisation of the Hairini Roundabout system has improved some of the immediate pressure on the corridor and the completion of the Harbour Link project in December will also improve traffic flows. These factors are currently being evaluated and will be taken into consideration in the ongoing programming of the larger project."
Tauranga City Mayor Stuart Crosby says the Hairini Link advanced works are an important first step in a major transportation project that will have significant benefits for the city.
“Tauranga City is working in conjunction with the NZ Transport Agency to get this project underway and completed so we have better functionality along the corridor. I encourage people to go along to the information day and look over the plans."
