The NZ Transport Agency is surveying roadusers and nearby property owners about the new passing lane and plastic post median installed between Waikanae and Peka Peka on SH1.
NZTA is trialling alternative median barriers, and would like feedback on the flexible plastic post system that has been installed along a 1.5 metre wide painted central median strip. The posts are spaced five metres apart and are designed as a visual barrier to help prevent head-on crashes.
A questionnaire has been sent to nearby property owners and circulated at local venues, including cafes. It is part of a study on the effectiveness of the median ‘safe hit post’ system, which will include a review of vehicle positions in the lanes, vehicle speeds, crash history, maintenance and driver feedback.
State highways manager, Wellington, Rob Whight says the trial is separate to any proposal to install a wire-rope barrier along stretches of SH1.
“The intent of this trail is to investigate improvements to highway safety compared with installing a full barrier system.”
