Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency is advising motorists to plan for southbound closures of State Highway 1 between Churton Park and Johnsonville for gantry installation and cable hauling, as preparations for Transmission Gully continue.
The southbound motorway lanes will be closed on Wednesday 19, Thursday 20, Wednesday 26 and Thursday 27 January from 7pm to 5:30am each night to install a large gantry across the motorway.
Mark Owen, Waka Kotahi Operations and Maintenance Manager, says the work is helping prepare the region’s transport network for the opening of Transmission Gully.
“We’re doing a huge amount of work to improve and provide people with the right information as they use it. This includes increasing the CCTV capability, improving signage, and extending southbound variable speed limits on State Highway 1 between Tawa and Johnsonville so that we are ready for the new motorway.
“It’ll allow us to keep a closer eye on how the network is flowing and ensure that we’re getting the right information to people, as soon as possible, to help them on their journeys.”
The closures are to install a cantilever gantry, a steel overhead beam spanning the width of the southbound motorway lanes, which will hold large electronic signs.
Southbound traffic will detour via the Churton Park offramp, Westchester Drive, Middleton Road, Johnsonville Road, and return to SH1 via the Johnsonville southbound onramp.
The Churton Park offramp and onramp will also be closed to southbound traffic for scheduled cable hauling. The Churton Park offramp will be closed between 7pm and 5:30am, Monday 10 January to Tuesday 18 January. The Churton Park onramp travelling southbound will be closed between 7pm and 5:30am, Sunday 16 January to Thursday 20 January.
Disruption is expected to be minimal, but motorists are advised to plan ahead.
