Auckland’s Northwestern Motorway (SH16) eastbound will be closed each night between St Lukes and the Central Motorway Junction from 9pm to 5am the following morning starting tomorrow, Tuesday 27 May until Friday 29 May.
The NZ Transport Agency says the night closures are necessary for enabling work to be undertaken as part of the SH16 St Lukes to Great North Road Upgrade Project.
Eastbound traffic heading east into the central city and port will be diverted off the motorway at the St Lukes interchange. Diversions will be signposted along Great North and New North Roads and other local roads.
Drivers are advised to allow plenty of time to get to their destination and use alternate routes from 9pm for the next three nights.
“These are significant closures and drivers that use the motorway at those times, especially freight and shift workers, will be most affected. We suggest planning ahead, and allowing more time for travel,” says the Transport Agency’s Acting Highway Manager, Steve Mutton.
“The closures will allow our contractors to get their work completed safely and efficiently. We’ve had great co-operation from drivers during other closures, especially as other Western Ring Route projects get underway, so we hope that support will continue.”
Westbound drivers using the Northwestern Motorway will not be affected by these night closures. The northwestern cycleway will also remain open.
The SH16 St Lukes to Great North Road Upgrade Project is one of six projects to improve and complete the Western Ring Route and to connect the Northwestern and Southwestern (SH20) motorways through the Waterview tunnels.
The Western Ring Route is one of the Government’s Roads of National Significance.
The project will widen the motorway from three to four lanes in each direction, and improve motorway ramps. As part of the project, Auckland Transport will fund improvements at the St Lukes Road-Great North Road intersection, and the widening of the St Lukes Road overbridge to benefit drivers, walkers and cyclists.
