The NZ Transport Agency is asking the local community for their feedback on options to improve safety on SH6 at Springlands.
This area of Middle Renwick Road was identified in the Blenheim and Wairau Plains Strategic Study of October 2008 where growth areas were indicated and possible infrastructure improvements relating to increasing congestion and road safety were identified.
Marlborough Roads Manager Frank Porter says the NZTA is talking to Marlborough District Council, local residents, business owners, schools and others in the area to identify and assess the best options to improve a 1km section of State Highway 6 (Middle Renwick Road), including the intersections of Boyce Street, Colemans Road, and Battys Road / Murphys Road.
Mr Porter says that in addition to looking at the intersections, the project includes the investigation and identification of options to improve traffic, pedestrian and cyclist safety between and beyond the intersections mentioned.
"Improving safety for everyone who relies on this important piece of highway is important to us, and we encourage the community to share their views with us on what they think would work best."
Along this corridor there is a mix of residential and commercial premises. In the greater area there are schools, a kindergarten and retirement villages. NZTA recognise that there are many interrelating factors that will need considering.
The NZTA would like to hear people's views on the best options to improve the 1km section of Middle Renwick Road. Feedback would be appreciated by Wednesday 16 March.
Options considered for the intersections are likely to include variations on roundabouts and/or traffic signal layouts. Access to adjoining and nearby premises along with road design layout such as lane width, flush or raised median, cycle facilities will all be considered for improvement.
NZTA expects that site investigations and reporting of the best options will be completed early in 2012 with detailed design work to follow.
