The NZ Transport Agency says that the first of the new summer season’s state highway rehabilitation projects in Northland will start on Monday (4 November).
“These projects are designed to ensure that the region’s state highway network remains in a good condition to help give people reliable and safe journeys – particularly as we head into our busy holiday season,” says the Transport Agency’s Journey Manager for Northland and Auckland, Jacqui Hori-Hoult.
Improvements to State Highway 1, known locally as Halse Straight, just north of the SH15A roundabout at Ruakaka, will start with drainage work on Monday. This is the first phase of a 1.88km rehabilitation programme that will continue into the new year.
Disruption will initially be minimal, however, work on the programme will become busier over the coming weeks. Drivers are advised to be on the look out for machinery and workers on the highway.
Work is also set to start on the second stage of the SH1 rehabilitation programme at Moerewa. This work covers about a kilometre of the highway to the 70kph signs south of the community. This project will also continue into the start of 2014. The first phase was completed earlier in the year
Ms Hori-Hoult says drivers are reminded to slow down and be vigilant through all roadwork sites both for their own safety and for the safety of the workforce involved in the improvements.
“The Transport Agency is working closely with the regional Police to enforce speeds through roadwork sites for the protection of all, and there will be an increased Police presence around roadworks,” she says.
These projects are the first of several reconstruction works due to be rolled out over the next six months as the Transport Agency takes advantage of more settled and warmer weather.
