Night works set to begin next week on High Street, Dannevirke

Contractors are set to begin asphalt resurfacing work on SH2 High Street in Dannevirke next Tuesday (24 January).

The work will be undertaken each night between 7pm and 6am, excluding Saturday nights, and is expected to be completed on 14 February.

This had previously been scheduled to begin on Thursday (19 January) with the same expected completion date of 14 February.

While the work is underway, SH2 in Dannevirke will be closed between Rawhiti Street and Swinburn Street.

There will be a signposted detour in place for traffic:

  • Northbound traffic will detour via Rawhiti Street, Queen Street, Allan Street, Guy Street and Ruahine Street.
  • Southbound traffic will detour via Swinburn Street, Waterloo Street, Miller Street and Denmark Street.

Waka Kotahi Manawatū-Whanganui System Manager Rob Service says while the resurfacing is being completed, people will still be able to access businesses on High Street.

“We have scheduled these works at night from 7pm to reduce the impact on the Dannevirke community as much as possible, however we acknowledge that unfortunately some disruption is unavoidable.

“We’d like people to know that they can still access the businesses, such as restaurants, on SH2 High Street which are open past 7pm,  as the footpaths will remain open, and parking will be available on the side streets.

Access to the Truck Stop will remain throughout the works; drivers are asked to enter through the back and exit on SH2 heading south. Access to all local properties will be available throughout these works if needed, managed by Higgins Contractors Ltd.

“These works on SH2 in Dannevirke are part of our long-term asset management plan and planned summer maintenance programme. The section of road is due a renewal and asphalt will perform well here.”

The works are weather dependent and may be postponed at short notice.

“We want to thank everyone for their patience and understanding while we complete this essential maintenance work,” says Mr Service.
