Resurfacing work costing $360,000 is underway on the north and southbound legs of State highway 1 between Fredrick Street and Albany Street, to replace the existing road surface that’s reached the end of its economic life.
The Transport Agency says site preparation work started today on the northbound section of highway from Fredrick Street to Albany Street and should be finished by 4pm tomorrow. Two traffic lanes will then be available until Sunday 10 November, when work on applying the new surfacing begins.
Transport Agency Otago/Southland Highway Manager Ian Duncan says, the contractor is working 6 nights a week between 6pm and 7am to minimise traffic disruptions. During this time, a single traffic lane will operate and road users can expect some delays.
When the northbound section of the highway between Fredrick Street and Albany Street is completed, the same work will carried out on the southbound section of the highway between these two streets. Weather permitting, the entire job is scheduled for completion by Friday, 15 November.
Mr Duncan said once finished, road users can look forward to a smoother driving surface, while a fresh coat of paint on the existing road markings will make them easier to see.
