The New Zealand Transport Agency is about to commence work on a new pedestrian crossing on State Highway 85 Tarbert Street Alexandra adjacent to the St Gerards School and Ranui Rest Home.
Work gets underway on Thursday 16 February 2012 and will be carried out by Fulton Hogan Ltd.
New Zealand Transport Agency Area Manager John Jarvis says this $28,000 project will improve pedestrian safety and is part of the Agency’s on-going programme of safety improvements on the Central Otago state highway network. New lighting will also be installed to improve visibility at the new crossing.
“The project will take about two weeks to complete. During this period motorists and pedestrians moving through the site are urged to take care and obey the temporary speed restrictions. Parents who drive their children to and from the school should let them out in Station Street or the Church car park in Killarney Street.”
Mr Jarvis says an adult should accompany children who need to cross Tarbert Street over this period. Every effort will be made to keep disruptions to both motorists and pedestrians to a minimum. We would appreciate their patience, while we complete a job that will have considerable safety benefits once it is finished.
