New passing opportunities on State Highway 2, south of Gisborne

|

This week the NZ Transport Agency awarded the contract to install passing opportunities on Kopua Hill, State Highway 2, to Hastings contractor, Russell Roads.

The project area is approximately 30km south of Gisborne, and involves creating two slow vehicle bays, one in each direction.

NZ Transport Agency Highway Manager Wayne Oldfield says the project will improve efficiency, resilience and safety.

“State Highway 2 is a vital link for the Gisborne region, and improving its safety and reliability is a key goal for the Transport Agency.

“Providing safer, more resilient passing opportunities on this narrow stretch of highway will improve efficiency and reduce frustrations for all road users,” Mr Oldfield says.

Other benefits of the project include:

  • improved route security
  • reduced delays
  • reduced maintenance costs.

The construction cost is estimated at $1 million. Work on the southbound lane is due to start mid-March and is scheduled to be complete mid-year.
