The new ramp replaces the current on-ramp that loops around and beneath the Redoubt Road Bridge. It is on the opposite side of Redoubt Road to the existing on-ramp so motorists can look for on-road signage to ensure they are in the correct lane for their destination. At 800 metres long and 10 metres wide its two lanes merge to become one before joining the motorway south.
The ramp forms part of a new triple level interchange at Redoubt Road in Manukau that on completion, will give motorists direct motorway links at Manukau City Centre between State Highway 1 and State Highway 20. The new interchange features a 320 metre flyover, an underpass beneath SH1, eight connecting roads and extensive drainage.
NZTA Regional Director Wayne McDonald says the new on-ramp is a significant step forward for Manukau motorists. “The opening of the new on-ramp exemplifies the progress that has been made near Manukau City Centre since construction began in November 2006. The SH20-1 Manukau Extension Motorway is now half way through construction and when completed in August 2010 will deliver more reliable and improved trip times for commuters and tourists alike, between SH1 at Manukau and the Auckland International Airport,” he says.
The new motorway will also bring considerable relief to local roads within the Manukau City Centre, such as Cavendish Drive and Great South Road. A new bridge at Lambie Drive Interchange will open later in the month.
The southbound lanes of SH1 between Te Irirangi Drive off-ramp and Takanini on-ramp will close overnight on Sunday 15 February to complete the final stages of work. In the event of bad weather the opening will be postponed to the next suitable day.
The new 4.5 kilometre motorway will have two lanes in each direction as part of the southern portion of the Western Ring Route – a 48 kilometre alternative to SH1 between Manukau and Albany via SH20, SH16 and SH18. Projects at Mangere Bridge, Mt Roskill and Waterview form the remainder of the SH20 link.
