The NZ Transport Agency would like to thank motorists for their patience and co-operation over the weekend while essential work took place to install a new moveable lane barrier on the Auckland Harbour Bridge.
Contractors worked Saturday and Sunday nights through to this morning to remove the existing 2.2km length of moveable barrier piece by piece and successfully install the new barrier sections.
There were some delays for citybound motorists on the Northern Motorway today during the early morning peak. All lanes were opened and operating on the bridge at 7am and traffic was free flowing by 9.30am.
“We apologise for any inconvenience to motorists over the weekend as the old barrier was replaced. The new barrier machine operates at twice the speed of the old machine, and so from this afternoon motorists will benefit from a much smoother transition from one lane configuration to another,” says NZTA Regional Director Wayne McDonald.
The moveable lane barrier increases the number of available lanes in the peak direction and maximises capacity on the bridge during peak times. The barrier system includes two new lane barrier moving vehicles which have replaced the first moveable lane barrier that was installed on the bridge in 1990.
