The NZ Transport Agency (NZTA) says despite some of the heaviest snow falls seen in Canterbury for many years most of the regions highways are now operating again.
NZTA Canterbury-West Coast Highways Operations Manager Peter Connors says apart from SH7 Lewis Pass and SH73 Arthur's Pass all highways are open thanks to some easing of the weather and the hard work of our highways contractors.
“For safety reasons, overnight closures are in place on SH7 from the Hanmer turnoff, SH73 between Porters Pass and Arthurs Pass and SH8 from Fairlie to Tekapo. These roads will be re-assessed at 9am on Wednesday 17th August. Restrictions are in place on SH80 Pukaki to Mt Cook and SH79 between Geraldine and Fairlie. These highways are closed to towing vehicles with chains essential for all other vehicles.”
Peter Connors said to ensure the safety of road users the NZTA is operating overnight patrols on SH1 between Kaikoura to Waipara, SH75 Hilltop as well as highways within the Christchurch City and the Waimakariri District. Any drop in temperatures will bring with it the danger of black ice and if this occurs it may lead to further highway closures.
