Work is continuing near central Nelson on the Maitai to Rocks Road Shared Path* project, a three metre-wide shared path for cyclists and pedestrians.
To date 80% of the scheduled work has been successfully completed, says NZ Transport Agency System Manager, Frank Porter. “This includes new kerb and channel, footpath base course, boardwalk, removal of surface markings, entrance-ways to businesses and the LED light upgrade along Haven Road.
“Remaining work includes completing the new traffic islands, concrete crossings, sections of footpath to be asphalted, surface markings and signage.”
Although originally aiming to be completed by mid this year, the cyclonic storms in February, one of which significantly damaged Rocks Road (part of State Highway 6), meant resources were diverted for a few weeks, extending the completion date for the shared path project.
Mr Porter says the project is now expected to be completed by the end of September.
“As well as the February storms which affected resourcing, the ongoing discovery of aged services – for example old and fragile pipes not marked on maps, has also added to the work and time required. These factors are not known at the start of a project and they increase the amount of work to do and the time it will take to do it.”
He thanked all drivers for taking care around crews and the businesses and their customers affected by the construction for their patience.
The shared path goes from the existing Maitai River shared path, along Queen Elizabeth II Drive, Haven Road and Wakefield Quay (part of State Highway 6).
* The project is an Urban Cycleways Programme-funded project that is being built by the NZ Transport Agency. Upon completion, the shared path and on-road commuter lanes will be jointly maintained by the Nelson City Council and the Transport Agency.
