M2PP resurfacing works paused during winter

The NZ Transport Agency has ceased resurfacing works on the Mackays to Peka Peka (M2PP) Expressway during the winter season.

Resurfacing along M2PP has been ongoing for the last 18 months and the Transport Agency’s Senior Manager Project Delivery Andrew Thackwray says the work has progressed well.

“To date we have resurfaced a total of 10.4 kilometres of the expressway, with a remaining 14.3 kilometres to be completed,” Mr Thackwray says.

“Warm, dry weather is necessary to complete resurfacing work successfully and ensure the new surface performs well. The weather we have experienced since the start of winter has made it difficult for us to continue with our programme.

“Rather than deliver work intermittently, the decision has been made to cease works for the winter season.”

The Transport Agency will recommence resurfacing in October 2019 when the weather is expected to improve, and the work is estimated to be completed by early 2020.

“We have been sure to prioritise the areas of the expressway where surface issues were most significant and that work has been completed already,” Mr Thackwray says.

Resurfacing work involves removing some of the existing surface layer, applying a new waterproof layer and placing a new Open Graded Porous Asphalt (OGPA) layer on top.
