Important information for drivers.
Lower North Island
- Christmas Parades are planned for Featherston and Carterton this weekend and will require closures on State Highway 2. Local road detours will be available, and drivers should allow extra time for their journeys.

- In Featherston, the closure will run from midday until two pm on Saturday. The closure will be between the intersections of Revans Street and Lyon Street.
- In Carterton, the closure run from one pm until four pm on Sunday. State Highway 2 will be closed between the intersections of Rhodes Street and Seddon Street.
- Night closures are no longer needed for the underslip repairs on State Highway 2 Remutaka Hill. However, drivers need to be ready for upcoming repairs on State Highway 2 between Masterton and Carterton
- Good progress is being made on the Ōtaki River Bridge clip-on path project. With barrier works completed, Stop/Go traffic management is no longer needed 24/7. Instead, it only applies Monday to Friday, from 7 am to 6 pm. Outside these hours, the bridge will be open to two-way traffic. It will also be open 24/7 during our Christmas closedown period (starting 19 December).
- Monthly maintenance will be done on The Terrace and Mount Victoria Tunnels. The Terrace Tunnel will be closed on Monday night and Mount Victoria Tunnel on Tuesday night. The closures run from 9 pm to 5:30 am. Drivers must use alternative routes and allow extra time for their journeys.
- Road works are planned for State Highway 2 in the Hutt Valley. They will be at the Kennedy Good Bridge intersection in Lower Hutt, and at Totara Park in Upper Hutt.
- Resealing work will be underway on State Highway 1 between Aotea Quay and Ngauranga Interchange.
- There is a local road closure from 6 am Monday, 2 December to 9 pm Wednesday, 11 December near State Highway 1 Basin Reserve to accommodate the test match between the Black Caps and England. This affects the Buckle Street slip lane between Cambridge Terrace and Kent Terrace.
- Looking ahead, repairs will be carried out on the State Highway 1 Manakau North Rail Bridge from 26 December until mid-March. The site will be subject to a 30 km/h temporary speed limits until this work is completed.
- Those who travel regularly between Wellington and Wairarapa need to be prepared for more traffic on State Highway 2 over summer, with an upcoming maintenance closure planned for rail lines. KiwiRail is renewing the line inside Remutaka Tunnel and carrying out other maintenance work and upgrades along the rail corridor. The line will be closed from 26 December 2024 until 10 February 2025.
Top of the South Island
- Chip sealing operations are well underway in the lead up to Christmas. Details on work sites and locations were shared earlier this week.
- Road reconstruction work on State Highway 63 at Wye River and State Highway 6 on the Whangamoa Hill start on 9 December.
