Lower North Island/Upper South Island - Planned state highway roadworks

|

Important information for drivers.

School holidays underway

  • School holidays begin this weekend. If you’re heading away over the next two weeks, make sure you are road-trip ready. Ensure your vehicle has an up-to-date warrant of fitness and that basic maintenance (coolant, oil, tyre pressures etc) is sorted before you travel.
  • Because it’s winter, particularly if you’re travelling in the South Island, be ready for winter driving conditions. If you’re heading through alpine passes, check the weather forecast before you leave. During winter weather and snowfalls, access to alpine routes can be restricted for vehicles without chains and towing vehicles before formal road closures happen.
  • Check the NZTA/Waka Kotahi website for more tips and advice.

Lower North Island

  • In Wellington, monthly tunnel maintenance will be done next week. The Terrace Tunnel will be closed between 9 pm and 5:30 am on Monday night. Mount Victoria Tunnel will be closed 9 pm to 5:30 am on Tuesday night. Drivers heading through the CBD will have to use local road detours.
  • There will be stop/go traffic management in place on State Highway 1 near Manakau on Sunday night from 8 pm to 5 am. This is to allow road crews to fix potholes in the area. Short delays can be expected, and road users should factor this into their travel plans.

Top of the South Island

The details below outline the main planned state highway roadworks occurring in the greater Wellington region and the top of the South Island over the coming week (from Saturday, 6 July).
