Important information for drivers.
King’s Birthday holiday weekend
- The holiday means more traffic on the roads as people head away to make the most of the long weekend. Traffic will peak on Friday as people head away and then again on Monday as they return home. Expect some congestion and travel delays. If you can, time your journey to avoid the busier periods.
- The Metservice has issued a Strong Wind Watch for Wellington, Wairarapa, and Marlborough for Saturday (1 June). North-westerly winds are forecast to approach severe gales in exposed places. It means drivers of high-sided vehicles (trucks, vans, and campervans), motorcycles, and light vehicles must take care in exposed areas such as SH2 Remutaka Hill and SH1 Transmission Gully – Wainui Saddle. Strong winds also increase the risks of tree falls and blown debris. Motorists need to be prepared for such hazards.
- Drive safely, take care when passing, watch your speed, and share the driving if you are travelling long distances – driver fatigue can be deadly.
Lower North Island
- Night closures are planned for the installation of a new electronic sign on the State Highway 1 motorway near Johnsonville.
- Directional closures will be ongoing over the next two weeks on State highway 2 near Petone for safety barrier works.
- There will be an extra week of night closures for State Highway 2 Remutaka Hill next month to allow changes to be made to slow vehicle lanes on the route. The extra week of night closures will begin on Sunday, 9 June.
- In Wairarapa, the Tauwharenīkau Bridge on State Highway 53 remains closed to traffic 24/7 until its repairs are completed. Drivers also need to be ready for rehabilitation works planned for State Highway 2 in Carterton starting next week
Top of the South Island
- Overnight closures have been extended for safety barrier works on State Highway 60 Ruby Bay
- Work will begin on 10 June on improvements to the Whakatu Coastal Pathway section of the Great Taste Cycle Trail in Nelson alongside State Highway 6, Whakatu Drive.
