Big changes affecting all drivers are planned for next weekend at the State Highway 14 / State Highway 1/ Maunu Road intersection in Whangarei for necessary work linked to the NZ Transport Agency’s upgrade of the busy crossing.
Some lanes will be closed from mid-morning Saturday (22 February) until mid-afternoon Sunday (23 February) so that the last of three large and heavy manhole covers which provide access for telecommunication services running under the intersection can be replaced.
• Two through lanes on SH14 for vehicles heading to Maunu Road and the CBD will be reduced to one lane through the intersection.
• Two through lanes on SH1 Northbound will also be reduced to one lane through the intersection.
“The restricted access will mean some congestion, which will delay people,” says the Transport Agency’s Highway Manager, Tommy Parker. “We will do everything to minimise those delays but people should allow more time to get where they are going, and be patient.”
Later this month, the community will notice that power poles and old lights will begin to disappear at the intersection as the final of the underground service relocations finishes. The widening and upgrading of the footpaths at the intersection is also progressing, and is due to be completed along with the rest of the project in April.
“As our work comes to an end here, our focus is shifting back to the Selwyn to Wilson improvements we had started in 2012 and completing the remaining section of that project,” says Mr Parker.
The Transport Agency is working with Whangarei District Council to improve the state highway through Whangarei. In all, there are five projects planned to help manage growing traffic numbers, improve safety and make travel easier for locals and visitors travelling in and around Whangarei. The improvements also include improved safety for people who walk and cycle.
The remaining three projects are Tarewa Road, Wilson Avenue to Fourth Avenue and Kensington Avenue to Manse Street.
