Improvements underway to keep Hawke’s Bay bridges safe and resilient

The New Zealand Transport Agency has begun a programme of structural bridge improvements across the Hawke’s Bay to boost safety and protect these valuable assets into the future.

The work, which started this week, will see structural improvements completed on seven bridges across the region over the next few months. The Transport Agency will keep traffic disruption to a minimum by working at night or on the weekend.

Most of the work will primarily be under bridges and often not visible, but motorists should follow the temporary speed limits and traffic management in place. Work sites that may affect motorists’ journeys are:

• Karamu Bridge – high pressure washing and painting of the bridge, minor repairs and inspection of the bridge.
• Mangatewai Bridge – bridge joints will be replaced over nine days with some stop/go management in place.
• Ngaruroro Bridge at Fernhill – high pressure washing and netting installed for protection from wildlife with some stop/go management in place over a period of six weeks.
• SH5 Mohaka Bridge on the Napier to Taupo Road – renewal of two bridge joints under full traffic management which will consist of temporary speed reductions and stop/go.
